Day 1 of TechUpNaija: Iba Edition Kicks Off with Social Media Marketing and Cybersecurity Training

The atmosphere at the Oniba’s Palace was filled with enthusiasm and curiosity as over 150 participants gathered for Day 1 of the highly anticipated TechUpNaija: Iba Edition, a digital literacy initiative organized by Seraph Public Relations and Media in collaboration with Othello Institute of Technology, Oniba of Iba Land and Avalanche.

This first day of training focused on Social Media Marketing, with an emphasis on equipping both young and elderly residents of the Iba community with essential digital skills to grow their businesses, personal brands, and professional opportunities.

Empowering Communities Through Digital Skills
The session began with a warm welcome, followed by an engaging training on how to effectively use WhatsApp Business, Facebook, and Instagram—three of the most accessible and powerful platforms for business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs in Nigeria.

Participants were introduced to:
  • How to set up and optimize a WhatsApp Business profile
  • The importance of Facebook pages for small businesses
  • Practical ways to create visual content for Instagram
  • Tips for engaging customers through posts, statuses, and stories
  • Introduction to boosting posts and reaching wider audiences on a budget
The training, which was practical and participatory, ensured that even elderly participants—some of whom had never explored these platforms beyond personal use—could follow and engage. The simplicity of the approach helped demystify digital tools that often feel intimidating to first-timers.
Introducing Basic Cybersecurity for Beginners
In addition to social media marketing, participants were also introduced to basic cybersecurity principles, ensuring they are not only digitally active but also digitally safe. The facilitators covered:
  • Password best practices
  • Identifying scam messages
  • How to protect personal data and devices
  • Safe online transactions and recognizing phishing attempts
A Day of Engagement, Insight, and Impact
Feedback from participants painted a picture of satisfaction and excitement. Many expressed how grateful they were to finally understand tools they had long considered complicated. The older adults in particular asked thoughtful questions, indicating they were actively following and eager to learn more.

"I have been hearing about WhatsApp Business but never understood how it works. Today, I created my profile, uploaded my product catalog, and even learned how to reply customers automatically!" – said one enthusiastic elderly participant.

"I didn’t know you could advertise with just ₦500. This is something I can try for my soap business," shared a young graduate participant.

Backed by Traditional Support and Forward-Thinking Partners
The program, which is supported by His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Sulaimon Adeshina Raji (Ashade I), the Oniba of Iba Kingdom, continues over the next two days with more advanced digital sessions and practical business applications. The training is being held across three days—June 16th, 18th, and 20th—at the Oniba’s Palace and the Jafo ICT Centre in Iba.

TechUpNaija: Iba Edition is part of a broader CSR vision by Seraph Public Relations and Media to promote digital inclusion and bridge the digital divide among underserved communities in Lagos. Participants who show outstanding engagement and improvement will also receive tech gifts and cash prizes to support their digital growth journey.
